Step1: Warm up----Free talk
T: Good morning, everyone. What’s the weather like today?
What was the weather like on May Day? Do you remember?
S1: It was sunny and hot.
T: What did you do during the May Day holiday?
Who was with you?
How did you get there?
How long did it take to get there?
How long did you spend on it?
(The teacher let the students talk about their holiday journeys. The teacher asks students several past simple wh-questions when they are talking. And also teaches the past simple irregular verbs during the free talk.)
T: I stayed at home during the whole holidays. What do you think of my holiday?
S2: It was boring.
T: I agree. So I decide not to stay at home next holiday. I want to fly to California.
Step2: Presentation
T: Where is California?
S1: It’s in America.
T: Yes. You’re good at geography. Here’s a map of America. Can you find California on the map? Where is it?
Ss: It’s on the west coast of the USA.
T: What’s on the left of it?
S2: It’s a sea.
T: Actually it’s an ocean. What is the name of ocean?
S3: Pacific Ocean.
T: Here’s a simple map of California. What kinds of places can you see in California?
Ss: Hollywood, LA, Santa Monica and Disneyland.
Teacher introduces these places one by one.

T: These pictures are from my friend. She went there last year. And she wants to tell us about her journey. Please open your book and number the places as you hear.
Step 4 Watch and answer
T: Do you remember this little boy? He is going to the USA and Betty is telling him something about her last journey in California. Now let’s watch the video and pay attention to the names of the places.
Step 5 Read and answer
T: Do you want to know more about her journey? OK. You can open your book and read the conversation carefully and answer the questions. Please
pay attention to the answers to wh questions.
Step 6 Summary
T: Can you make a summary about Betty’s journey without reading books? Don’t be afraid. I’ll give you some help.
